Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has been practised in India for over 1000 years and was originally used as a technique to keep long, thick hair in healthy condition. It only involved massage of the head and hair.

However, the modern Indian Head Massage includes the upper back, shoulders, neck, upper arms, scalp and face.

On a spritual level...three of the major chakras or energy centres are located in the head; the crown, the brow (or 3rd eye) and the throat. Head massage helps to balance and stimulate these vital energy centres, promoting a sense of well-being, relaxation and positive energy.

How Does it Work?

The neck and shoulders are where tension is particularly prone to accumulate and Indian Head Massage helps to eliminate muscle tension in these areas.. Indian Head Massage works with a firm and gentle rhythm to help unknot blockages and relieve the uncomfortable build-up of muscular tension. It relaxes the scalp and helps tone up the subcutaneous muscles, helping to relieve headaches and eyestrain. It also stimulates scalp circulation, which helps to strengthen and improve the texture of the hair. The massage to the face has a very soothing effect and increases lymphatic drainage, removing toxins from the facial area. Indian Head Massage can also help with sinus problems. Some allergies and hayfever can be considerably assisted and it has the added benefit of calming the emotions too, promoting relaxation and relieving stress.

What Can I Expect During A Treatment?

Before the commencement of your massage, the therapist will ask you a few questions about your condition etc. You will then be seated on a chair and depending on the therapist you may be asked to remove heaving clothing or to remove your top and wrap a towel round yourself, every therapist is different. The Massage will then beging on your shoulder and neck area moving to the scalp and then your face, some therapist may use oil for the face. A point to remember is that your hair will be slighly messed up so it is a good idea to take a brush with you for afterwards.

Who Can Benefit?

Indian Head Massage is a gentle, relaxing therapy and everyone can benefit, from small children to the elderly. There are very few contra-indications and it is a good all round therapy for everyone.
